Identity
The Soundmind is dedicated to the review of New Music / Contemporary Art Music events in the United States of America, with a principal focus on the current major areas of activity: the New York City Metropolitan Area, Boston/Cambridge, Chicago, Southern California, and the San Francisco/Berkeley Bay Area.
We believe that the focused sharing of information in this way, directly from the community, is the best path forward for truthful discovery and examination of the performance of this music. The New Music / Contemporary Art Music community is growing at a rapid pace, and as a result, very few of the events being held throughout the country receive the coverage and exposure that they deserve. Traditional print and online media is shrinking, leaving music reporters to cover the full gamut of music – which means fewer and fewer in-depth events reviews due to the enormous demands on their limited time.
Rather than accept the inability of most traditional media to cover these music events and relinquish the fate of these events to obscurity by lack of recognition, The Soundmind aims to give the New Music / Contemporary Art Music community its own voice. We have created a central hub where the community can highlight the many distributed events taking place and share their own viewpoints, analysis, critique, and praise. The Soundmind is a platform that empowers the New Music / Contemporary Art Music community to not only share honest reviews of music events – but in doing so, create greater awareness for the New Music / Contemporary Art Music movement in the United States as a whole.
In line with this empowerment, The Soundmind will be constantly searching for new contributors in all areas to share their perspectives. Though our primary focus is on the New York City Metropolitan Area, Boston/Cambridge, Chicago, Southern California, and the San Francisco/Berkeley Bay Area, we are open to accepting articles from anywhere within the United States, and to eventually adding blogs as well for new geographies, when warranted by a high level of activity in those areas. If there is a large New Music / Contemporary Art Music movement in your area, please let us know – if there is enough activity and contributors in any given area, we will gladly expand.
And such is the spirit of The Soundmind – helping to empower the vibrant American New Music / Contemporary Art Music community to take its future into it own hands. Though we may all create, compose, and perform in different areas, our creations should not be geographically confined. Let’s come together and help share these musical experiences with each other, and to the larger audience that has not yet been exposed to the movement.
